Who are R.HOUSE?
R.HOUSE is a new, innovative concept in rural living, developed and delivered by architects Rural Design and James MacQueen Builders. The R.HOUSE home was conceived to withstand the natural elements, provide high quality, inspirational design and to be faster than a more traditional build – a simple solution for new housing in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. R.HOUSE provides a unique opportunity for you to create a home tailored to an individual or family lifestyle and environment. Each home is characterised by a high level of design, detail and specification and is sustainably built using modular construction.
The approach to design is crisp and contemporary, grounded in an understanding of history and a respect for the environment. R.HOUSE’s simplicity and the robust materials selected to build them evoked the timeless forms of traditional Highland barns and steadings. This simplicity and respect for the landscape means that they can nestle comfortably in any site.
A key element of the R.HOUSE approach to building is sustainability and energy efficiency. Designing homes with high levels of insulation and airtightness passes direct savings onto owners year on year.
How is an R.HOUSE Built?
Each R.HOUSE is built by James MacQueen Builders using modular off-site construction. This process is substantially quicker than a traditional build approach and allows for build quality and cost certainty. The use of modular construction provides a range of different options for potential homeowners and a simplistic, practical layout.
Each home comes complete, ready for you to move in.
In practical terms an R.HOUSE provides;
• Firm priced service with costs fixed prior to build
• Fully managed design and build service
• High levels of insulation and air tightness, reducing running costs and increasing energy efficiency
• Contemporary award winning design

Try an R.HOUSE
Experience an R.HOUSE in the stunning holiday rental property of The Eyrie on the Isle of Skye.
Located a short drive north of the island’s capital of Portree, The Eyrie has some of the island’s most famous landmarks and beauty spots on its doorstep, many of which have been made famous in some recent blockbusters. It’s just north of the iconic Old Man of Storr and powerful Lealt waterfalls and just south of the colourful rock formation know as Kilt Rock, Staffin beach – famous for it’s Jurassic footprints – and The Quiraing, made famous in the recent adaptation of Macbeth.
Throughout, the contemporary house is flooded with light thanks to expansive floor to ceiling windows and doors – that also maximise the jaw-dropping views from every room to Skye’s east coast, the off islands and on a clear day, to the Torridon Mountains and Gairloch on Scotland’s west coast.
Engineered oak floors add to the glamour (and practicalities of island life). The house is super-insulated and heated with a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery system, keeping it cosy in winter and cool in the summer – the perfect place to retreat to after a day exploring this enchanting isle.
Furniture, soft furnishings and stoneware from Scottish luxury goods company, Anta, soften the bright, light rooms.
To experience what it’s like to live in an R.HOUSE book your stay at The Eyrie on our website www.r-escape.co.uk. If you then decide that you would like to have your own R.HOUSE, we will deduct the price of your stay from the final house price.
